According to a representative of sanofi-aventis Vietnam, the UICC World Cancer Campaign, in partnership with sanofi-aventis, is launching a call for projects as an integral component of the Childhood Cancer Campaign under the banner “My child matters”. The following have been selected as pilot countries during the first year of the campaign: Bangladesh, Egypt, Honduras, Morocco, Philippines, Senegal, Tanzania, Ukraine, Venezuela and Vietnam. Each year, more than 160,000 children are diagnosed with cancer, and it is estimated that 90,000 will eventually die of their disease. Although childhood cancers represent a small percentage of all cancers, most of them can be cured if prompt and essential treatment is accessible. The Childhood Cancer Campaign consists of three main components, (1) the call for projects, (2) a worldwide mobilisation and awareness campaign to highlight the effects of childhood cancers, and (3) the preparation of a comprehensive state-of-the-art report on childhood cancers, which will be made available to the general public on World Cancer Day, 4 February 2006.
